Mothers and Babies
The Othello Ridge Centre for Compassionate
Adoption (ORCCA) has been designed to both model
and promote private adoption possibilities in Canada
for “at risk” babies and their mothers. The initiative
was launched in 2006 after Community Builders
tenant support workers in Vancouver’s Downtown
Eastside were unable to find suitable supports for
two pregnant women. The initiative hopes to
successfully demonstrate that more “at risk” Canadian
children and their mothers can be cared for privately,
by loving and resourceful families.
ORCCA is currently modeling compassionate
adoption in Vancouver at the Prince Albert Community
House, a nine suite apartment facility that provides
relational housing for Best Practice Market Housing
staff. The adoption initiative is attempting to provide
“behind the scenes” support so that participants can
raise their adoptive and biological children in as
normal a setting as possible.
In 2008 Community Builders plans to open a second
private adoption centre on Othello Road in scenic
Hope, British Columbia. At the site a large log home
on two acres overlooking beautiful Kawkawa Lake is
currently under construction. The home will provide
accommodation for the founding ORCCA family, up to
four adopted children, two “at risk” mothers and will
feature a bed and breakfast area that will promote the
private adoption of at risk infants and their mothers.
