Emergence
by Steven Johnson
Understand more
about emergence and
the power of small. Emergence

We exist to create self-organizing social networks that foster personal wellness in marginalized neighborhoods.

Our Vision

We have a desire to expand our existing social networks in North America and sub-Saharan Africa "organically," without creating a centralized bureaucracy.

Our Values

  • Power of small
    • Bottom-up development of social networks
    • Validation of all persons, especially the most vulnerable
    • Decentralized program management
  • Self-sufficiency
    • Financial independence through the creation of enterprising non profit ventures
    • Program sustainability with the support of lean business management
    • Self-management of community-based programs
  • Love as an Active Ingredient
    • Redemptive responses to persons trapped in poverty cycles
    • Non judgmental interactions with persons holding contrary ideologies
    • Restorative justice for victims and perpetrators of wrong-doing

Our Methods

  • We develop sustainable community partnerships through:
    • strategic investments from social entrepreneurs
    • empowerment of persons indigenous to marginalized neighborhoods
    • ground level services from intentional (non indigenous) staff and volunteers who support the efforts of indigenous persons
    • innovations by social service providers who develop creative ways for marginalized persons to access health, legal and financial supports
  • We maintain healthy social networks that emerge through:
    • facilitation of random interactions that occur naturally in safe and support environments where persons are allowed freedom of movement and expression
    • recognition of patterns of wellness that result from multiple random interactions with the parameters of defined social networks
    • reinforcement of feedback loops that circulate information on wellness patterns throughout the social network
    • consolidation of lever points that tip social trends in the direction of wellness priorities
  • We expand our emergent neighborhoods through:
    • Organic growth which recognizes community uniqueness
    • Natural development that waits for mature growth opportunities
    • Acceptance of both growth and decline in community development

Spiritual Equity

Community Builders is fueled by the spiritual equity of its participants. The Society recognizes the intrinsic spiritual worth of all persons and has no religious, political or ideological bias.
