Featuring: Mama Dina and the Wake of the Terminator

In March of this year, the video "Kony 2012" went viral on YouTube. The short online film is part of a global effort to stop the Uganda-based Lord's Resistance Army and its leader, Joseph Kony. Atrocities by Kony include the recruitment of an estimated 66,000 child soldiers and the displacement of 2 million people.

Kony 2012 has more than 89 million views to date on YouTube and has raised over 13 million dollars for its creator, Invisible Children, Inc. It is obvious the world wants to do something positive in countries where Kony lurks; namely, Uganda, DR Congo, Chad and Sudan.

While the world watches videos about Kony and donates to groups that know how to market international strife, indigenous community leaders in Africa are quietly working without funds to pick up the pieces left behind when militias wreck havoc in their communities.

Mama Dina, a DR Congo woman visited regularly by CBG's Canadian personnel, works tirelessly to support her community in Uvira. Many of the estimated 5 million people who were killed and raped in the recent Congo wars lived in Mama Dina's region. Problems continue. Just last week, troops associated with the militia leader, Bosco Ntaganda (called 'The Terminator' by locals), assassinated a tribal leader in Mama Dina's city and sparked widespread violence.

Undeterred, Mama Dina reported this week to CBG by text that she is trying to help her friends become self-sufficient with an agricultural project, despite the conflict. Mama Dina's friend are a Pygmy group who are regarded as the lowest social caste in the eastern parts of DR Congo and need help from local community groups. Although Mama Dina struggles to feed her own children, she will not be stopped in her efforts.

We Canadians can do two things at the same time; watch videos that promote efforts to stop guerrilla warlords and financially help community saints like Mama Dina.

Click here to send a tax receiptable donation to people like Mama Dina. CBG sends 100% of the funds received through www.payitforwardsociety.ca to micro credit recipients overseas. Even $20, $50 or $100 will go a long way. In DR Congo, a small micro credit grant will help a family to become self-sufficient. Funds are sent by CBG through Western Union and arrive in minutes, directly to people like Mama Dina. .
