Program highlight: Peer Employment

Peer employment program

We empower residents to take next steps on their employment journey.

The Peer Employment Program is built on the belief that everyone has value and the potential to contribute to their community—regardless of their current circumstances. For individuals experiencing homelessness, employment often feels out of reach due to barriers like stigma, lack of experience or limited access to resources. This low-barrier, steppingstone program creates opportunities for residents to build confidence, earn income and gain valuable work experience in a supportive environment.

There are two levels within the Peer Employment Program:

Street Keepers

This is our entry-level, honoraria-based peer employment program for Community Builders residents. Participants support the cleanliness and upkeep of their housing sites, fostering pride of place and connection to community. Street Keepers are paid an hourly honorarium and can earn up to $500 per year.

Restart

Restart is a graduated level of the Peer Employment Program, designed for residents ready to take on more responsibility and explore longer-term employment goals. Participants are paid a day rate and join Community Builders operations teams in Maintenance, Logistics or Kitchen roles. With support from a dedicated Employment Support Specialist, Restart participants receive one-on-one case work to set employment goals, identify barriers, build resumes and develop job search strategies. It’s a pathway to greater stability, employability and independence.
