This past week, Naomi Place hosted a lively community gathering for Canadian Multiculturalism Day. The event was made possible thanks to funding from Canadian Heritage. Set in the heart of East Vancouver, Naomi Place was the perfect place to celebrate the diversity that makes our city and our country so special.
Despite some threatening Junuary skies, the rain held off and we were treated to a mild summer day, ideal for lawn games, burgers and connecting across cultures. Around 60 people came out to enjoy the afternoon, including Community Builders residents from Naomi Place and nearby housing sites, staff and community members from the Collingwood neighbourhood.
Axe throwing was the surprise crowd favourite, but there was friendly competition all around, with cornhole, soccer and Kubb keeping people moving and laughing. Guests were invited to tour the Naomi Place garden, and the event was fueled by a barbecue courtesy of Naomi’s own Head Chef. Thank you for keeping everyone well-fed!
We are proud to live and work in a country where multiculturalism is a source of pride and unity, not something to be feared or ignored. Our staff and leadership reflect a wide range of backgrounds, languages, and perspectives, and the residents we serve bring their own rich cultural traditions into our housing communities. Friday’s event was a much-deserved celebration of that reality, and a small but meaningful way to build connections, challenge stigma and honour the strength and resiliency of the people who call Vancouver home.
