We couldn’t have asked for better weather for our Annual Sports day on July 12th, or a better turnout. More than 80 Community Builders staff and friends came together to Empire Fields to make this event the summer highlight that it was.
Six teams competed in a series of challenges that brought out our competitive spirit and our inner children. There was a scavenger hunt and classic egg-and-spoon race, followed by an epic, multi-layered “Gauntlet of Champions” relay that tested coordination, teamwork and stamina: corn hole, tug of war, sack jumping, crab walk and soccer dribbling.
Scores were kept throughout the day, and at the end, the winning team was recognized with chocolate medals. First place or not, everyone left a winner. Many attendees shared that the day brought back memories of summer birthdays, schoolyard games and simpler times. For frontline staff especially, whose work is often emotionally demanding, Sports Day offered a joyful break and a chance to reconnect with colleagues across programs and sites.
After the games wrapped up, we gathered for an incredible outdoor feast prepared by our chefs Kevin, Charity and Terry. The menu was as generous as it was delicious, from Terry’s pulled BBQ chicken with slaw to Kevin’s famous Taiwanese nuggets and Charity’s pansit. There was something for everyone—beef sliders, spicy black bean burgers, aloo gobi, potato and pasta salads, and a spread of sweets including fruit, mini donuts and cheesecake bombs.
Events like this don’t happen without a lot of care and coordination behind the scenes. A heartfelt thank you to our Stars Committee for bringing this day to life. Sports Day continues to be a bright spot in our summer calendar, an opportunity for the Community Builders family to get together, have fun and enjoy one another’s company in the sun.
